The Minister of Higher Education witnesses the celebration of "the completion of 1000 liver transplant operations" in Mansoura University ranking third place in the world

On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Prof. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, witnessed Mansoura University’s celebration of the completion of 1000 liver transplant operations, since the program was established in May 2004, achieving a record success rate that ranged from 88% to 92%, to occupy the liver transplant program at the university, ranking the third in the world after South Korea and India.

In the presence of Prof. Reda Hegazy, Minister of Education and Technical Education, Dr. Ayman Mukhtar, Governor of Dakahlia, Prof. Cherif Khater, President of Mansoura University, Prof. Mustafa Refaat Ameen, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Universities, Prof. Mahmoud Saqr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, Prof. Elsayed Abdel-Khalek, former Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Prof. Al-Hilali El-Sherbiny, former Minister of Education, Prof. Ahmed Gamal El-Din Moussa, former Minister of Education, and a number of university presidents, leaders of the Ministry of Higher Education, University vice-presidents, deans of faculties, and executive and popular leaders in Dakahlia Governorate.

During the celebration, Prof. Ayman Ashour praised the achievement of the liver transplant program at Mansoura University, the conduct of 1000 liver transplant operations with distinct success rates, and the competition of international centers in the same field, he added that the ministry is always supporting the program and continuing the series of achievements that serves a large number of patients, whether inside Egypt or in Arab and African countries, the ministry is also following up the performance of university hospitals, and their medical and health services, for providing health services to citizens, the ministry includes 120 university hospitals, and that these hospitals enjoy the confidence of citizens for the excellent health services it provides.

Prof. Cherif Khater gave a presentation on the achievements of Mansoura University and its advanced positions in international rankings and the accreditation of many faculties, referring to the projects undertaken by the university and its success in achieving the elements of the national strategy for higher education and scientific research. He added that liver transplant operations are carried out by a distinguished medical team headed by Prof. Mohamed Abdel-Wahab, the pioneer of liver surgery and supervisor of the liver transplant team at the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center at Mansoura University, indicating that the center includes 20 beds, that put the center at the top of the global list for distinguished medical teams in liver transplantation which is carried out by 28 doctors from various specialties.

Prof. Muhammad Abdel-Wahab presented the liver transplantation project at the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center at Mansoura University, explaining its role in the elimination of waiting lists of liver transplantation, providing liver medications for free, the steps of establishing a new 700 meter building for liver transplantation that will be the first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa to specialize in liver transplantation, aiming to perform five operations per week instead of two, and to serve more than 200 cases annually. This number is unprecedented in any center of liver transplantation worldwide from living donors, as well as following up patients before and after the operation to avoid complications for patients and to accommodate a larger number of patients from Arab countries, as well as training medical staff on liver transplantation from Egypt and Arab African countries.

At the end of the celebration, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research honored a group of doctors of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center, members of the liver transplant program team, and some university leaders.
