A medical team at Mansoura University successfully saved the life of a young girl through a rare and delicate surgery after she was admitted to the emergency hospital

Prof. Cherif Khater: This achievement is a shining example of the ability of Mansoura University's medical teams to handle the most complex surgical cases according to the highest international standards.

Dean of the Faculty of Medicine: The integration between medical specialties and the speed of treatment decision-making contributed to saving the girl's life.

A specialized medical team at the Heart and Thoracic Surgery Center successfully saved the life of an 11-year-old girl with special needs after performing a delicate surgical intervention to treat a rare and serious condition: a severe aneurysm of the right main artery below the collarbone within the chest cavity. This artery is one of the vital arteries responsible for supplying blood to the right hemisphere of the brain, the neck, and the right arm, and the condition posed an immediate threat to her life.

The case began when the girl was admitted to the emergency hospital suffering from severe health symptoms that required immediate medical intervention. Diagnostic tests and scans revealed a dangerous aneurysm in the artery, which carried the potential for severe bleeding, a serious brain injury, or complete loss of function in her right arm if she did not receive immediate treatment. Immediately, and under the direct supervision of Prof. Amir Fikry, Director of the Emergency Hospital, a multidisciplinary medical team was formed to handle the case. Medical preparedness was heightened, and the necessary procedures were initiated to urgently transfer the child to the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Center.

The case underwent a thorough medical examination, including a review of all tests and clinical assessments. This was followed by the immediate preparation of the operating room and preparations for a potential artery replacement using a specialized vascular graft, given the sensitive location of the artery within the chest cavity and its direct impact on blood flow to the brain and limbs.

The surgical team was led by Prof. Nour El-Din Naaman, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, with the participation of Prof. Hossam El-Wakil, Head of the Vascular Surgery Department, and Prof. Mohamed Sand, Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, along with a team of doctors, nurses, and technicians. The delicate surgery lasted approximately four continuous hours, during which the medical team successfully repaired the aneurysm without the need for artery replacement, while fully preserving blood flow to the brain and arm. The child was discharged from the operating room in stable condition with no neurological or functional effects and was transferred to the intensive care unit for further medical care and close monitoring.

Prof. Cherif Khater, President of Mansoura University, praised the medical team's success, emphasizing that this achievement reflects the efficiency of the integrated medical system at Mansoura University Hospitals and its ability to immediately handle critical and rare cases according to the latest international medical standards. He pointed out that the Emergency Hospital is a cornerstone of the university's healthcare system, playing a pivotal role in the rapid reception and diagnosis of critical cases and timely medical decision-making, which directly contributes to increasing patient survival rates and reducing serious complications.

The university president commended the integrated efforts of the university hospitals' administration, all medical teams, nursing staff, and support personnel, affirming that this achievement reflects a successful institutional model based on teamwork and integration among the elements of the healthcare system. This supports the university's strategy of providing advanced and safe medical services according to the highest standards of quality and healthcare, and reinforces the national role of Mansoura University Hospitals in serving patients and receiving critical cases from across the country.

Prof. Ashraf Shoma, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals, explained that the speed of diagnosis and immediate coordination between various medical specialties were the decisive factors in making the timely surgical decision. He emphasized that Mansoura University Hospitals possess a comprehensive system for handling critical and rare cases. He added that the success in managing such complex cases reflects the readiness of the university hospitals in terms of advanced medical capabilities, infrastructure, and the continuous training of medical staff, ensuring the provision of safe medical services according to the latest internationally approved treatment protocols.
