Mansoura University wins the first place for the best environmentally friendly university competition

Mansoura University won the first place jointly with Cairo University of the best environmentally friendly university competition.This was during the meeting of the Supreme Council of Universities that was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the New Administrative Capital.

Prof. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Prof. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of the Environment, Prof. Reda Hegazy, Minister of Education, announced on August 26, 2023 the awards for the best environmentally friendly university competition for the academic year 2022/2023.

The award was received by Prof. Cherif Youssef Khater, President of Mansoura University

In the presence of Prof. Mustafa Refaat, Secretary of the Supreme Council of Universities, university presidents and ministry leaders.

In his speech, the Minister of Higher Education congratulated the winning universities, and appreciated the university campus being environmentally friendly, noting that the universities are working to encourage and raise students' awareness of interest in environmental issues, which will reflect positively on society. The minister also referred to the interest in scientific research in universities in various environmental issues, especially those are related to climate change.

Prof. Ayman Ashour said that Cairo and Mansoura Universities won the first place award equally, Ain Shams University won the second place, Assiut University won the third place award, and Beni Suef University won an encouragement award as an emerging university that includes several distinguished faculties, thanking the members of the committee concerned with the competition for their efforts to evaluate the universities participating in the competition. He added that all Egyptian universities are keen to integrate the environmental dimension in all student, cultural and artistic activities throughout the year, referring to the participation of the community service and environmental development sector in Egyptian universities in educating public opinion on environmental issues in Egypt, as well as organizing convoys concerned with preserving the environment and its natural resources.

The Minister of Environment said that the education and scientific research file is one of the most important files for achieving environmental preservation and sustainability, as the Ministry of Environment works with various sectors, whether directly related to the consumption of resources such as energy, transport, water resources and agriculture, and indirect sectors such as youth, education and culture, which require various tools that help to consolidate concepts of environment and sustainability in the conscience of the citizen. She added that it’s important to link the files of the environment, education and scientific research, whether at the national or international level, in terms of providing human resources capable of overcoming environmental problems and their connection to economic and social problems, especially with the intertwining of challenges and issues, so we started with school students from through cooperation with the Ministry of Education to integrate the concepts of the environment, climate and biodiversity into school curricula, from primary to secondary school, and to work in parallel with universities across the Republic in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Prof. Cherif Khater said that this award confirms the commitment of the university and its teams to achieving environmental sustainability, and encourages them to continue to adopt environmentally friendly practices to contribute to building a better and more sustainable future.
